Paddle boarding on St John
Paddleboarding has been around since the early 1930′s and Stand up paddleboarding since the 1960′s (more on that later) but it seems as though SUP (that is Stand-up paddle boarding for those of us new to the term) has just arrived on the scene. It is THE new craze on St John and just about anywhere with a body of water. And, no wonder why it has taken off on St John for it is an absolutely wonderful way to experience our St John waters. Your vistas of the land and sea are 360 degrees. Your pace is yours to determine. SUP can be a real workout or a leisurely way to get out and enjoy our crystal clear tourquoise waters.
This year paddleboarding was actually part of the St Thomas Carnival Season’s activities. Hopefully, it will also be incorporated into the Carnival activities on St John and our other sister island St Croix as well.
Here are a few outfits (and individuals) who have paddleboards for rent on St John:

Stand-up paddleboarding in the South Bay has overtaken traditional, prone paddleboarding in popularity and is approaching the popularity of surfing. You don’t need to be a top water athlete to enjoy this sport. With proper instruction and the proper board, most people are able to stand-up paddle after a single lesson. Of course, this is in calm, smooth water with no wind. Novice boards are thick boards and easy to balance on. Rentals and lessons are available at many South Bay locations, including Dive N’ Surf in Redondo Beach, Tarsan Standup Paddling, Spyder Surf and Pier Surf in Hermosa Beach and Nikau Kai in Manhattan Beach.
Paddling off the beach through surf is for advanced paddlers. But there are a several easy ocean access spots in The South Bay for the novice. One is the beach in front of Veterans Park in Redondo Beach, where generally there are no waves. The easiest, local entry spot is King Harbor, which is protected from swells. Don’t forget it is mandatory to wear a PFD (Personal Floatation Device) inside the harbor and not a bad idea if you are by yourself in the open ocean. The newest wave of PFD’s are small, comfortable belts and are available at the local SUP shops.
This summer dozens of short and distance races are scheduled for both novices and world class paddlers. The next South Bay race is the Hennessey’s Return to the Pier, from the Hermosa to the Manhattan pier on Friday, May 25. For a list of other races, visit Hennesseysraces.com or WorldPaddle Association.com. The racing scene is fun and full of comradery. Our local races bring together many top SUP athletes who are very approachable and generous with their paddling tips. Another good source of information is Stand Up Paddle magazine.
Paddle like a champion the next time you step in our Mother Ocean.
Tim Ritter is director of the Hennesseys Paddleboard Racing Series and has produced over 75 major prone and SUP races, including the Hennesseys U.S. and World championships.
Watersports companies battle for business in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE—
Watersports such as parasailing and paddle boarding keep tourists flowing to South Florida area beaches, but it’s far from a day at the beach for some of the firms that provide the fun.
An ongoing battle over paddles and a recent parasail theft highlight just how fiercely some of Fort Lauderdale’s watersport companies compete for tourist dollars, especially during Spring Break.
But as some of these companies struggle to survive in a down economy, that competition has become more turbulent and cunning, said Tim Schiavone, longtime owner of the historic Parrot Lounge.
“The beach has always had its flair for competition, but it’s become really crazy lately,” he said. “It’s just like in every industry that’s trying to make it in this economy. There are too many dogs and not enough bones.”
Mario St-Cyr says his problems with business rivals began about three years ago when the he quit his real estate business in hopes of cashing in on the paddle board craze.
On a recent afternoon, St-Cyr found himself hiding behind a tree in order to take pictures and video of a man teaching a small group of people how to paddle board.
The pictures and clips are among the dozens St-Cyr has taken of his competitors since 2009 when Fort Lauderdale officials awarded his company, Paddles and Boards, an exclusive contract to provide paddle board lessons and rentals at George English Park near Fort Lauderdale beach.
Compiling evidence and calling authorities on competitors who venture into his turf has now turned into a full-time job, St-Cyr says.
“It’s become a free-for-all out here,” St-Cyr said. “It’s like the Wild West.”
In 2011, St-Cyr called the city’s park rangers 22 times to complain about other paddle board providers venturing into his water turf, park records show.
He says many of the competitors show up without any company logos or insignias and set up on the shore as a rental outlet. They also meet with clients at the park for lessons. Most of the cases end with a police officer or a park ranger asking the group to leave the park, according to the park ranger reports.
Earlier this month, some of his competitors merged and won a Fort Lauderdale bid to provide the same services on a nearby stretch of the beach.
Shortly afterward, St-Cyr appeared before the Fort Lauderdale City Commission to complain.
“They have never played by the rules and now you are rewarding them with their own exclusive contract,” St-Cyr told city leaders, who said the other firm won the bid fairly.
Not all incidents end as peacefully.
Wayne Mascolo, owner of Aloha Watersports, one of the oldest parasail companies on the beach, says he is convinced that a competitor was behind a March 1 burglary on one of his boats.
The theft, caught on surveillance video, shows two men breaking into the boat docked at East Las Olas Boulevard and A1A. The two men walk away with one of the parasails that has Mascolo’s company name and phone number written across the parachute.
Mascolo said he immediately recognized the men as two former employees. One of them now works for a competitor.
“They didn’t want the [parasail]. They knew they couldn’t use it around here,” he said. “They didn’t want me having one right before Spring Break.”
On March 14, Fort Lauderdale Police arrested roommates Jamie Tesseneer, 23, and John Mokarzel, 23, and charged them in connection with the burglary. Both told police they were Mascolo’s former employees, according to arrest reports.
In a telephone interview this week, Mokarzel said he currently works for Mascolo’s competitor, Atlantic Beach Club, but denies he and his roommate were the ones shown on the video.
“[Mascolo] is just trying to embarrass me and my boss,” Mokarzel said. “I saw the video and those guys look nothing like us.”
A man who identified himself only as the owner of Atlantic Beach Club denied any connection to the incident.
“I have competition taking shots at me all the time and trying to put me out of business, but I never complain or retaliate,” he said. “I just try to mind my own business.”

Great time. Searched around until we found the quiet spot on the intercostal waterway to take our first lesson. Mario was easy to deal with and made the whole experience alot of fun. Lots of quick tips made handling the board easier than I expected. Great core workout also.
Mario has a way of making you feel comfortable on the paddle board. Navigating in the moonlight is a definite “to-do in Ft. Lauderdale”. Can be a romantic date or just relaxed paddle experience. You will love the experience…I did! Thanks Mario-Monica
Wow! So much fun….what a great way to see a little more of Fort Lauderdale. I can’t believe how easy it is, once you are on and get comfortable you are set. Anyone can paddle board, it is nothing like surfing…which takes so much time to learn. Mario gives great tips and pointers and sends you on your way feeling confident and ready to go. Thank you so much, we had a great time.
5 STARS… LOVED IT!!! I went for my first time, a bit nervous, and was quickly calmed down. I was given great advice and tips by Mario (the owner) before starting, and successfully completed one hour WITHOUT falling in!!! I had a blast and got a workout all at the same time!!! I would recommend ANYONE to do this!!!
What an outstanding way to be outside, on the water and get some exercise! I have horrible balance, but through Mario’s (the owner) instruction I was able to paddle around and felt confident by the end of the private lesson. Very easy-going and super cool owner! What a great time, would recommend to anyone at any age level!! Thank you Paddles and Boards!!
This is a fun activity that is easy to learn and offers a good workout. Paddles & Boards is a great place to start, because the launching point is at a calm spot on a river in Ft Lauderdale. There’s opportunity to do more challenging paddling, but no need to throw a beginner into a difficult spot on his or her first try. Owner is very friendly, articulate and kind. I am definitely going to do this again next time I visit Florida! -Emily
Awesome! I booked a private lesson for a group of friends from the UK and we had a blast. None of us had ever paddled before, but our instructor/guide Mario walked us through everything so easily we were up and on the board in no time. It was both a great work out and a relaxing experience at the same time. I am booking another group of friends to go out again this week. I can’t hardly wait. See you on the water!
Had a blast, fun and relaxing! Thanks Mario!
what a great experience, it was so easy to find information on the website, easy to find the location, easy credit card transaction right there on the spot, I absolutely enjoyed it, I was trying to find a hobby and I think I found it
Thanks!
- Sep 12, 2011I purchased a semi-private lesson for my wife and I for her birthday and WOW, was it perfect. Starting with how easy it is to find you, we were out of our car and into the water within minutes. I purchased a semi-private lesson for my wife and I for her birthday and WOW, was it perfect. Starting with how easy it is to find you, we were out of our car and into the water within minutes. We loved how you used your ipad to do your business work – very hitech! You made our first experience with paddleboarding a perfect one. The weather held out for us, your explanations on technique were right on the money, and we got a great feeling that you were enjoying each and every minute. We took to it pretty quickly and we have not stopped telling our friends about our experience. Plan on seeing a lot more of us. Thank you for making my wife’s birthday a memorable one. We’ll see you soon. Rick
Hitting the waves in Peru, Australia
Go online right away and you might catch San Clemente’s Kolohe Andino, 17, testing his skills against 11-time world champion Kelly Slater as the 2012 ASP World Tour is under way in Australia.
The $425,000 Quiksilver Pro began Friday at Snapper Rocks, Gold Coast, and you can view it live atquiksilverlive.com/progoldcoast/2012.
Andino, Slater and Australian wildcard Garrett Parkes are in Heat 6.
Brett Simpson of Huntington Beach faces Australian Taj Burrow and Hawaii’s Fred Patacchia in Heat 4.
San Clemente’s Patrick Gudauskas faces Brazil’s Miguel Pupo and South Africa’s Jordy Smith in Heat 8.
The winner of each heat advances to Round 3 while the two runners-up go to Round 2 in the double-elimination contest.
On the women’s side, Courtney Conlogue of Santa Ana took third place in her first-round heat earlier in the day, but she gets a second chance in round 2.
This is the first of 10 stops on the ASP World Tour.
Meanwhile in South America, San Clemente’s Brandi Baksic won a race Friday while San Clemente’s Emmy Merrill is a finalist and San Clemente’s Colin McPhillips could be a finalist this weekend in the ISA World Standup Paddle and Paddleboard Championships.
Saturday is the final day of the six-day event at Miraflores, outside Lima, Peru. The latest team standings posted at the end of the end of the day Thursday showed Australia in the lead among 17 countries with the USA second, Brazil third, South Africa fourth and Peru fifth.
Baksic won the women’s technical race Friday, finishing in 19 minutes, 12 seconds, a minute and 37 seconds ahead of runner-up Angela Jackson of Australia. There were 11 racers.
Merrill is one of four women’s finalists in SUP surfing after taking first place in all three of her heats leading up to the final. At press time, she and Shakira Westdorp of Australia had qualified for the final, with four other women set to fight it out for two remaining slots in the final.
McPhillips, a former ASP three-time world longboard surfing champion, won his heat in rounds 1 and 2 of SUP men’s surfing. In round 3 he advanced by placing second in a four-man heat. In round 4 he took third, just missing the final. That sends him and Brazil’s Ciao Vaz, the fourth-place finisher from that heat, into a consolation four-man heat. McPhillips, Vaz and two others will battle for two remaining slots in the men’s surfing final.
San Clemente’s Rob Rojas is competing in SUP races and finished eighth out of 17 competitors in one of Friday’s races. His time was 44 minutes, seven seconds. Australia’s Brad Gaul won in 38:14.
To watch Saturday’s finals, visit isawsuppc.com, but try it early as Peru is three hours ahead of California.
Strong Start By Travelsim Sup Team Australia

In clean 2-3ft conditions, Team Australia’s three surfers Justin Holland, Jackson Close and Shakira Westdorp advanced to the next round after all locking in seconds in Round 1 at La Pampilla in Lima.
Close (12.93), Holland (15.53) and Westdorp (10.90) surfed with confidence on the opening day to avoid the repechage elimination heats.
Team USA set the early standard with all three surfers – Colin McPhillips, Sean Poynter and Emmy Merrill – winning their heats. All defeated the Team Australia surfers setting up a healthy rivalry early in the event.
The opening day was the smallest of the surf forecast, but with the assistance of the paddle, competitors were able to power through sections and create speed that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.
McPhillips is one of three World Champions competing in the event. Team Australia captain Jamie Mitchell – who will be competing in the SUP Technical race on Friday and the Marathon race on Saturday – is a 10-time paddleboarding world champion, and France’s Antoine Delpero is a former ISA World Surfing Games Longboard Champion.
Competition resumes in the morning, with the Qualifying Round 2 for Men’s SUP Surfing, followed later in the day by the first prone paddle event, the Women’s Technical Paddleboard Race featuring Team Australia’s Jordan Mercer.
The event is being broadcast live at www.isawsuppc.com/live
Surfing Australia would like to recognise the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), TravelSIM and Suncorp for their continuing support of the Team Australia Program.

SeaDream Adds Paddleboards to Their Collection of Complimentary Water Toys
Stand up paddle surfing (SUP) or stand up paddle boarding is an emerging global sport, particularly popular in warm coastal climates and resorts. Now SeaDream I and *SeaDream II have two, full volume boards for entry to expert riders. These new boards (Amundson 11’.6”) are the biggest all around SUP boards, handling up to 250 pounds. At 30”wide, with a relatively straight outline, they are very stable and track well with speed. A little bit of tail rocker means you can take it in the surf too.
Stand up paddle surfing is fast becoming a popular water surf activity because it allows a wide range of athletic types to get involved. The main benefit of the sport is that SUP provides the participant with a strong ‘core’ workout. Its Hawaiian heritage is said to have originated from surf instructors standing up on their boards to better see their students and the incoming swell. Unlike surfing, stand up paddle boarding is very easy to learn. Within one hour you can become comfortable in the water and on your board. Also unlike surfing, SUP surfers don’t need to worry about high and low tides.
(Note: SeaDream I now has two SUP boards. * SeaDream II receives her two boards on March 31, 2012.)

Crossing troubled waters: finding balance through outdoor pursuits on the Coast of Maine

The body can bring happiness to the mind. Mind and body are fiercely intertwined. When you do activities that strengthen the body, you can work towards balance. Whether it is trail running, paddling, backcountry skiing – you name it, engaging in endurance activities creates an equilibrium that helps us navigate the instabilities of life. I need to be active and feel fresh air coarse through my lungs. Exertion burns stress; it forces me to focus in this fast paced world, and it brings a certain steadiness to my life. But I am not a fan of being inside on a machine. Outdoor recreation offers more than the gym. While you have to contend with environmental factors and fatigue, the natural world is also a constant source of inspiration. It doesn’t matter what activity brings you into the wild or on the water, it’s the process of moving through a challenge that generates a toughness and sturdiness that you carry with you into all aspects of life.

Owens Beach at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma is a great place year around. Hike along the scenic waterfront promenade to the Boathouse Marina, have a picnic, view ferry boats and fishing craft, or rent a kayak for a few hours of leisure paddling on the sound during summer months .
It was 3 years ago at this very place I learned about stand up paddleboarding SUPing .Last sunny but cold Saturday , I returned for a short “get to know this place better ” trip…I held pretty close to the shoreline where the current was slower, enjoying the the views of 100-foot tall cliffs. My destination was a little spot formed of natural clay – a favorite place for local seals to hang out.Sure thing, when I was approaching the spot, there were about 4-5 seals laying around. But as soon as I got closer, they bailed…all but oneLiterally, around the corner you can see the beautiful Tacoma Narrows Bridge. I heard and later felt that north of Owens Beach the currents were pretty strong. So, I decided to stop here, take a break, and enjoy the views from the distance.
